Elio Quiroga
Born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Canary Islands), studied Computer Science Engineering. He started as a video artist. His first experimental videos are into the Spanish Collection of the Museo Reina Sofía about Video Art.
Quiroga directed the controversial feature film Fotos which was awarded Best Script and the Jury’s Special Award at the Sitges International Film Festival in 1996, where it was enthusiastically praised by Quentin Tarantino; it was nominated to the Méliès D’Argent for Best European Fantastic Film, to the Corbeau D’Or at the Brussels Film Festival, as well as to the Fotogramas de Plata (Awards voted by the readers of the most important film magazine in Spain). He has directed and produced also the short animated film "Home Delivery”, from a short tale by Stephen King and presented by Guillermo del Toro. “No-Do”, a horror movie sold to 20 territories was his third film as director, after the sci-fi “La Hora Fria” which sold very well internationally too (15 territories). As screenwriter, he is cowriter of “Ausentes”, a horror film directed by Daniel Calparsoro.
His animated short film “Me llamo María” qualified for the Oscars 2011. His 4th feature, documentary “The Mystery of the King of Kinema”, about legendary silent film star Max Linder, won Special Mention of the Jury in the 2014 Gijón Film Festival and the 2016 Platinum Award in the Yakarta IFCOM. Recently he has directed the short film “Sirena Negra” (“Dark Siren”) based upon the homonymous theatrical play by Vanessa Montfort, under the label of “Hijos de Mary Shelley”. The film won Best Actress Award at Mumbai Short Film Festival, Best Film Award at Noida International Short Film Festival and the Best Makeup Award at LA Shorts Awards. His 5th freature “La estrategiadel pequinés” adapts noir best selling novel by Alexis Ravelo. He has publishedthe novels “Idyll”, “El Despertar”, “Los Códices del Apocalipsis” and “Los quesueñan” which won the Minotauro Novel Award 2015, the most important sci-fi literary award in Spanish language. Later, the thriller “Entre los sueños”, was published in october 2018 by Ediciones B. In 2021 he has published "Astral", winner with the Malas Artes Novel Award.
